TRAIL: Sawmill Mountain
LENGTH: 4 miles RT-(can be adapted if you wish)
DIFFICULTY: Easy with minimal gain
Sawmill
DESCRIPTION: This trail, which intersects the Pacific Crest Trail ("PCT") cuts down to the Upper Shake Campground (This is an excellent spot to camp overnight if you are making a longer trek on the PCT, or just to spend a weekend with your family). Soon after you pass the Shake cutoff, you will come to the trailhead on the south for Burnt Peak. This is another wonderful hike in the area. (See Burnt Peak section).
HOW TO GET TO THE TRAILHEAD: Take I-5 North to SR 138 towards Palmdale. Turn Right onto Pine Canyon Road. Turn Right onto Service/Fire Road 7N23. Park. Walk up the service road 7N23 for 2 miles. You will see a gate on the left that is usually locked. Enter around the gate and continue on this road to Upper Shake Campground. Just short of the picnic area, you will see a trail that goes down the hill on the left side. Take this trail down the hill and back to Pine Canyon Road. Once you reach this road, make a left turn and you'll soon be back to where you parked the car!
