Slide Mountain is a vigorous, 13 mile RT hike to the top of the mountain where you will find a Fire Lookout tower with some of the best views around. It is located between Lake Piru and Lake Pyramid. You begin the hike near Frenchman's Flat, and area of Piru Creek that is under consideration for Wild and Scenic Status. The forest service gate is closed from this point, so you will need to hike up the road for about 1 1/2 miles to reach the trail head for Slide Mountain. There you will find an insignificant looking steel and yellow painted gate. Enter through the gate and you will begin your ascent. This trail is best in the spring when the wildflowers are incredible. Summer is way too hot and dry to hike this trail, and there is little cover from the sun. April and May are suggested for best hiking conditions. Bring more water than you think you will need, lunch, snacks, etc. and wear good boots and a hat. Poles are very useful on this hike as some areas are steep.

Directions: Take I-5 North to Templin Hwy. Turn left. Go under the freeway and turn right when the road ends, just beyond the freeway. Take this road until it ends, which will be several miles. Park at this point. You will need a forest pass to park here, or run the risk of getting a ticket.  One of our hiking participants, Jack Clough took this hike and posted his experience on  the web.
